This week, NOW on PBS looks at some state ballot measures that would eliminate race or gender considerations in public hiring, contracting and education programs. The controversial initiatives are being spearheaded by Ward Connerly, a long-time affirmative action opponent who some are accusing of ballot fraud. Click here for more information. Dave Winer over at Scripting News reflects, “Obama does mean change, here’s why.” He concludes saying:
Let’s focus on who owns the Presidency and be happy if we’ve been able to introduce a little pushback to the defense and oil industries, this will make change, if we in fact are able to.

As you may have heard, 10 supporters will be joining me backstage before I accept the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
I’m pleased to announce that those supporters have been selected, and I wanted to tell you a little about them.
The people who make up our movement are of all different ages, races, and backgrounds — and these folks are no different.
Lenny is a former naval officer from Emerald Isle, NC. Barb is a teacher married to a farmer in Fallon, MT. James is a law student in Massillon, OH. And Anne is a retired budget analyst from Indianapolis.
John from Boulder, CO, believes developing alternative energy is the answer to an array of policy problems. And Kayla from West Fargo, ND, didn’t feel like she could ever be part of the political process — until now.
They each bring their own unique perspectives and experience, and they are united by their hunger for change.
You can read more about these amazing people below. I’m looking forward to meeting them at the Open Convention, and I hope you will join us in sharing this important moment.
If you cannot make it to Denver, you can get together with your friends and family and watch my acceptance speech at a Convention Watch Party. It’s going to be a big night, and you can join millions of supporters across the country to make it a success.
Sign up to host or attend a Convention Watch Party in your community on Thursday, August 28th:

Thank you for your belief in our ability to bring real change to this country. You continue to grow and strengthen our movement in ways no one thought possible.

Dave Pollard explains Why McCain Will Win: I’ve been predicting a McCain win since I spoke with Joe Bageant and read his book. Now the polls are tipping his way, and others are trying to explain it by blaming the media. But people don’t believe the media much — they believe their friends, and the people they see and hear. The 40% who are uneducated, white, working-class Americans therefore believe McCain when he says the Iraq war is winnable, and that he cares about their values. That’s all they need to hear. To win, Obama needs 84% of the remainder of voters, an impossible stretch. And as Elizabeth Kolbert reports, McCain has thrown away all his previous principles and jumped on the pro-big-business, anti-environment bandwagon to line up the big right-wing corporatist campaign donors.

Chicago, IL – Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign announced today that John Berge will serve as Nebraska State Director for the general election. Berge most recently served as the Executive Director at Western Nebraska Community College Foundation.
Berge said, “Having lived and worked in politics in all three congressional districts in Nebraska, I am honored and excited to join the Obama for America campaign, because his message of changing the direction of the country and unifying us to address the serious challenges we face is resonating with Nebraskans in a way that has not happened in at least two generations. We will be working to unify Democrats, Republicans and Independents to make that change a reality.”
“We are grateful to have John play such an important role in our organization. The network of volunteers and grassroots energy built up during the historic primary season has given us an enormous and unprecedented opportunity in the general election,” said campaign manager David Plouffe. “John brings the expertise of Nebraska, which will allow us to be competitive in Nebraska as we wage an aggressive campaign and compete for every vote.”
Berge, a graduate of Morrill High School in western Nebraska, has served as district manager for Senator Ben Nelson and as special assistant for Senator J. Robert Kerrey and J. James Exon, respectively. He has also been the State Executive Director of the Farm Service Agency in Lincoln, and a Development Assistant for the Nebraska AIDS project in Omaha.
