The Caucus Process

December 15th, 2007 Don 1 comment

Caucusing may seem like a mystery, but it’s not.

Presidential caucuses are much different than the primary voting that most Nebraskans are used to, but you will find that the process isn’t all that complicated — and it will allow you to meet with your Democratic neighbors to discuss the important issues of the day. Here is everything you need to know to make your caucus experience a success:

1. Show up at the Ag Building at the Lincoln County Fair Grounds Saturday February 9, 2008 at 3:00 pm. Unlike a primary election, caucuses require everyone who wishes to participate to be in the same room at the same time. The caucuses will all be held on February 9th, 2008. The time will vary, depending on your county. In Lincoln County we will meet at 3:00 pm.

2. Choose whether you want to support a candidate or enter your caucus undecided.

3. Be prepared to realign. After all caucus-goers have chosen a candidate — or decided to be “uncommitted” — each
candidate’s supporters will be counted. If your candidate does not receive 15% support in your caucus, you will have to pick a different candidate. Your Caucus Leader will do the math to determine which candidates are nonviable. During this time, you may try to convince other caucus-goers to join you in supporting your candidate.

4. Select delegates from your caucus to the County Convention. After the realignment phase, and all caucus-goers have been counted, your Caucus Leader will allot each candidate a number of delegates to the County Convention. Each group of supporters will elect delegates from among themselves. The County Convention will be held
sometime in early June 2008.

Remember, if you have any questions, your Caucus Leader will be there to answer them.
If you want to help organize for your caucus, contact Lucas our Caucus Organizer at info@lincolncountydems.org.
